A quick update for you all on the new council nominations, outstanding service award, and the ITOC MS meeting time at the LEAD conference. 

First, the council nominations.  We have only received one council nomination.  Please consider getting involved with RID and ITOC. Reach out to colleagues who are passionate about seeing change in this field.  We need to have representation in RID.  We are leaving the call for nominations (self-nominations are welcome!) open until 7/23.  Part of our agenda at the conference meeting will be to determine the new ITOC council.  Fill out the Google form or reply to me (itoc.chair@gmail.com). 

Second, we have received two nominations for the ITOC outstanding service award.  One of the nominations is Dr. Leandra Williams, who was the recipient of this award in 2015.  As much as she does deserve to win this award over and over, we'd love to see others also be recognized for their work in the community as well.  I know there are many of you who have worked tirelessly to improve our field.  We are also accepting posthumous nominations. Continue to send names of people you'd like to see recognize to the google form or reply to me (itoc.chair@gmail.com). 

Last,

Our ITOC member section meeting at the conference will be held Sunday, July 23, 5:30-7 at Salon 1.  We will try to Facebook live the meeting for those who would like to join remotely.

If you haven't already entered the lottery for the RID conference in Salt Lake City this summer, I want encourage you all to think about it.  Presenter bios are starting to be posted on the conference website.  I heard that most of the presenters for the leadership track are presenters of color with a variety of intersectional backgrounds. This conference will be very different than past conferences, and I hope to see many of you there!

2017 LEAD Together Conference:
General Lottery Announcement

Register now through March 31st

General Lottery: We are pleased to announce that the General Lottery for the Leadership and Skills tracks for the 2017 LEAD Together conference is now open! The 2017 LEAD Together conference is different as compared to the previous registration process. The basis of the lottery provides members an opportunity to secure a registration slot and then have a period of time to pay for the cost of registration.   How it works: Simply fill out the online form anytime between March 1-31st. When registering, members can only select to be included into the lottery for either the Leadership OR Skills track---not both! After the lottery closes, all names will be placed into a system which will automatically randomize the order of the names and assign a number. The number represents the member’s place in the registration queue. The first 400 members (200 Leadership and 200 Skills) on the list will be notified via email no later than April 10th.  Members then will have from April 10 -28th to pay the $425.00 registration fee. If payment is not received by April 28th, the member forfeits their registration slot and it will be given to the next member on the randomized list. National Interpreter Education Center reports

Recently released:

During 2016, the National Interpreter Education Center (NIEC) conducted a series of 5 interpreter practitioner focus groups.  The findings from each group are now available.  These reports outline challenges faced by interpreters working in our field today and their experiences in interpreter education programs.  Interpreters and educators alike will find these reports provide unique perspectives that reflect the changing dynamics facing us today.  Please share this information with your colleagues.

These are the final publications prepared by the NIEC as our federal funding ended as of September 30, 2016.  It was the mission of the NIEC and the National Consortium of Interpreter Education Centers to explore the state of the art of interpreting and offer resources to practitioners and educators between the years of 2005 and 2016.  We hope that these reports will provide insight into the current challenges facing many interpreters and foster new approaches for the future.

Apply for an ITOC Slot for the 2017 LEAD conference

Please pass this on to any interpreter of color who may be interested: 

ITOC Member Section has 4 guaranteed slots (1 slot is a free package that includes registration, 4 nights hotel, and up to $500 in airfare) to award for the 2017 RID LEAD Conference.  We would like to guarantee these slots to Interpreters of Color (and at least one Deaf interpreter of color).  For full disclosure, 1 slot is being considered for a current ITOC council member to attend.

2 (or 3) of the guaranteed slots, we are looking for persons willing to commit to serving in some capacity in RID Leadership OR present at one of next year's regional conference OR  write a VIEWS article on multicultural issues in our profession.  ITOC will be covering conference registration for at least 2 of these slots. 

1 Free Package Slot will be award to a person who will commit to serving on the ITOC counsel from 2017-2019 as Chair, Vice-Chair, or Secretary OR serve as a Region I, III, or IV representative for the term 2016-2018.

ITOC and RID Board meeting notes

Here is the summary of my meeting notes from Sunday.  I was taking notes while also participating in the conversation at times, so I might have missed some information or gotten some information incorrect. Please let me know if you notice anything that needs editing.

This meeting was facilitated by Ritchie Bryant, Deaf Member at Large. Other board members in attendance were Erica West Oyedele, Vice-President, LaVona Andrew, Member at Large, and Julie Anne Schafer representing EPS (Ethical Practice System Review Task Force).  Thank you, RID Board, for making this happen!

Prior to the meeting, the ITOC counsil collected questions and from our membership to ask the board. The information below is organized by question/topic. 

Criminal Conviction Policy

What is RID's current status with this policy?

We need more time to rewrite some parts of CCP. We are still gathering more feedback to see which crimes would apply.  We need to narrow our scope. We will be doing PPO (Power, Privilege, Oppression) training with those on the committee that will be reviewing the convictions. Once we finish the next revision, we will be sharing the document with ITOC and BLeGIT to make sure both groups are satisfied with the revisions.  We will be sending out a call for comments again next year around January.  We will then review the comments and see if we need more discussion/revision before setting up the policy.  

In regards to the concern about who will be most impacted, there will be a big difference in who we think will be impacted vs. who will actually be impacted.  We are not looking at convictions related to drugs and/or theft, but at those related to people who have taken advantage of Deaf people.  Currently with EPS, a person must complain within 90 days for action to take place.  However, often criminal convictions happened after the 90 day deadline which prevents EPS from actively doing anything about that situation. (ex. situations related to physical abuse of Deaf children). This is not a new concern but a reoccurring one.  This policy will help us confront situation when our 90 day policy prevents us from doing so.  Another reason for this policy is that school districts require a background check for any individual who works at a school.  However some states waive the background check if the person is RID certified, which we feel is not right.  We feel we must act to be responsible and protect the interest of the community but we also are not wanting to control interpreters too much.  It is a fine balance which is why we need your feedback.

PPO (Power, Privilege, Oppression) CEUs

what is the current status on this?

It seem there is an assumption that RID not making progress with PPO CEUs. It is an on going process, and we have been talking about it during board meetings. We set up a work group that includes representatives from each of the three counsils and Professional Development Committee.  We asked for Member Sections representation as well but we currently have no MS representatives in the work group. We wanted to wait for MS representation before proceeding which caused us to have a slow start. We currently have a rough draft that we are translating to ASL.  Once done, we will be looking for feedback on the document. PDC already gave their approval on it.  Keep your eyes open for more information.

The current workshops  focus on diversity in terms of of a binary understanding (Deaf-hearing, female-male, gay-straight, etc) How will RID broaden its scope to include different communities and address cultural/identity differences within leadership, workshops, trainings, and conferences?

Training is done by members.  If the feeling is that information is missing from workshops and training, then we need members to be more involved.  Host training sessions.  Be involved with the conference committee.  

Conference 2017

- how is RID going to be sure to allow an equal amount of POC into the RID conference in 2017 with a lottery system? 

This is more of a HQ question than an RID board question.  However, that being said, we tried our best to answer. Stephanie Chao, ITOC Chair, answered with information from recent meeting about the conference with additional information from the board.

With the lottery system there is no way to guarantee who gets in, and unfortunately, the numbers are not on our side. Realistically, the conference numbers have never been on our side. Conferences have always been limited to who can afford to go.  However, this year we will have a live streaming option for individuals or group.  If an AC or group of interpreters register to live stream ahead of time, the group can get the handbook and supplemental materials that will be used at the conference. We are hoping that even though there is a smaller number of attendees onsite, there will be a greater overall impact.  

Also, each Affiliate Chapter and most member sections will have 2 guaranteed spots they can hand out. The member sections related to identity (ITOC, Deaf Caucus, BLeGIT, DPI) will each get 3 guaranteed spots PLUS 1 "free" spot.  For the "free" spot, RID will be covering conference fees, hotel room, and will be giving a travel stipend.  The board will be giving guidelines to the ACs and MSs to help us figure out how to hand out these guaranteed spots. 

(The ITOC counsil is currently brainstorming on how to assign out these 4 spots.  Potentially having our own lottery for interpreters of color? Or using the spots for a Deaf Interpreter of Color, an interpreting student of color, a new counsil member for ITOC?  We are open to ideas and feedback from our membership. We will keep everyone posted as we figure this out.)

Deaf Community of Color

How does the board plan to support/foster relationships with the Deaf community of color?

How will RID maintain/improve relationships with organizations focused on POC (NADC, NBDA, Mano a Mano, NAOBI, etc...)?

There currently is no plan in place, but I (Ritchie) will bring it up during our board meeting.  This is an area we can improve on, especially as the Deaf member represetative of the board. 

CASLI

What policy/procedures/commitments, if any, will the new CASLI group take as it relates to transparency within the pool of test screeners/raters? 

It is important for us to recognize CASLI as a separate group.  These are questions that need to be asked of CASLI, we can't answer for them.  ITOC can contact CASLI if you are interested to learn more about their procedures and testing.  For RID's part, we have already informed them it is important to include diverse groups of people in their process, including interpreters of color.  Feel free to contact them and show our involvement and support.

Ageism 

What provisions are made to support and retain non-traditional age students of color as they enter the interpreting field and strive for NIC certification?

What's RID's position on ageism?

How does the organization demonstrate their position? 

Ageism hasn't been a topic we have specifically discussed, but like all -isms, it is worth talking about.  This will be something covered through PPO training.  The RID board as a responsibility to its members; however, change in the field happens through members in their communities.  Reach out to people in your home town, your Affiliate Chapter, your local ITPs.  Host conferences and workshops.  We all need to show support in topics that are related to PPO, not only on the national level, but in our own communities as well.  We need members to care about issues like this and work from the ground up.  

Executive Director Search 

Who is on the committee for this search and are different groups within RID being properly represented (ITOC, Deaf Caucus, DPI, etc)?

We set up a committee one and a half years ago, the transition team.  We selected the team by asking counsil members and board members to summit names of people they thought would be a good fit.  We partnered with different Deaf groups as well.  The people on the transition team came from that list of recommendations.  The team includes Deaf individuals as well as people from different ethnic groups. We made sure to have people with varying identities to include different perspectives. Throughout the last year and a half, some people withdrew from the team while others were added on.  The transition team did the originally screening.  The interview process had multiple steps, and through the process some applicants withdrew.  Once we narrowed down the candidants, we opened it up to members for their feedback.  We will go through your feedback before making our final decision.  

The board has committed to transparency, but we need to ask what that means for us as a membership.  For example, some candidates from diverse backgrounds had to withdraw because their candidate statements were being made public.  Some of their current employers did not know they were looking for work elsewhere, so finding this out could negatively impact their livelihood.  Since the position is looking for someone with a unique set of skills, the number of applicants were limited.  Sharing candidate statements for the reasons mentioned further limited the pool of applicants.

ITOC goals and more!

Hello! I am michon shaw from Tampa Florida where I was born and raised. I am Vice Chair for ITOC from 2015-2017.

Here is a brief review of ITOC's goals for the 2015-17 term. 

We would like to see a change in activity level from ITOC.  We want to see more activity via our website, FB page, and google group.  A little while ago, we had switched from our old yahoo group to the new google group.

We want to put out monthly vlogs from the ITOC counsil as well as wanting to submit more articles to the RID views

Our second goal is to have more gatherings for interpreters with different ethnic backgrounds to come together to network with one another and to continue to grow a strong relationship. We want to recognize and honor those in our community with skills and knowledge to offer.  We would like to see more presenters of color during the MS meeting times during the national and regional conferences.  

We also want to send out a member survey to see what would you like to ITOC accomplish over the next 2 years.  We also would like to do more fundraising to help sponsor interpreters and transliterators of color to be able to attend conferences. 

Those are our goals for 2015-2017

One more announcement. 

On january 23, we are hosting an ITOC happy hour in San Francisco [California]. If you are available [and in the area], please join us!  We want to see more ITOC events being hosted all over the nation. If you have any ideas or are interested in hosting an ITOC event, please contact us through FB or email us.

Long awaited blog from ITOC!

Hi Everyone, 

I know it has been a while since ITOC has posted.  We apologize and thanks for your patience.  ITOC hasn't posted in a while. We recently turned over to the new ITOC counsel and it took us some time to get settled into our new roles.  Over the next few months, each counsel member will be introducing themselves to you.  

So, let me introduce myself.  My name is Stephanie Chao.  I am the new ITOC Chair. 

This past summer during the RID conference, we had an ITOC MS forum.  We had such a great turn out of around 50 people.   That was amazing.  We also handed out the first ever ITOC Outstanding Service Award to Leandra Willams.  Congrats! We will be doing this again in 2017, so we will be asking for nominations and your votes at that time.    

During the forum, we also asked people to come up and share what they would like to see ITOC to do. Some ideas included: wanting to see more POC posting vlogs on the RID website and on social media in general.  wanting ITOC to provide scholarships to interpreters of color to attend conferences and workshops. However, to make that happen, we need your fundraising ideas!  We would also like to set up quarterly public forums to gather your feedback and ideas.  The first forum will be set up on our facebook page.  If there seems to be a lot of interest, we can set up a video call for future forums.  

This next month, we will be setting our goals for the 2015-2017 term of ITOC.  We want your input in what you would like to see ITOC to do.  

We are still in the need to fill a few regional representative positions (regions 1, 3, 4). if you are interested, please contact us.

Hello! Hi, I'm Michon Shaw. I'm from Tampa, Florida. I was born and raised here in Florida. In 2006, I graduated from the University of Southern Florida's (USF) Interpreter Training Program. Since that time, I have been working as an interpreter with 6 years in the VRS setting. While VRS is a wonderful field to work in, I wanted more, so I made the decision to return to school.

 

Now I am a graduate student and I have an expected graduation date of Dec 2015. I am studying interpreting pedagogy. That means that I am taking courses to become an interpreter educator. Specifically, in the college setting, for interpreter training programs. It's something that I am excited about.

 

I'm also excited about the future of ITOC. Yes! I know it will be a good one! Thank you for selecting me to be your Vice Chair. I am excited because I can envision us coming together and having a collaborative discussion about our field. Of primary importance, ITOC needs to think about how we can grow our membership. Also, we need to discuss the current state of the field. If you look around, there's not that many interpreters and transliterators of color. Right?! There's not many. And yes, while there are some areas that have more interpreters of color than others, there's not many of us. I want to see us sit down and figure out how we can help our field grow, with more interpreters and transliterators of color.

That's my goal.

So, do we need to go into high schools, and grab high school students and encourage them to take ASL classes? Maybe. The point is, let's come together, discuss and figure out what we, the ITOC members... what can WE do?

We have vacancies on the council. Region 1, 3 & 4 still need representatives.  If you are interested in filling the vacancy for your region please contact itoc.secretary@gmail.com. The new database from RID allows us to sort out our members by region. We will also begin to directly ask members to serve as region representatives. The term for current region reps ends at the conclusion of the 2016 RID Regional Conferences.

National conference update:

We are looking forward to the RID national conference! We have several conference activities planned.

·  Saturday, 8/8 ITOC member section forum at 12:30pm. We will provide an opportunity for networking, give an update on ITOC activities over the last two years, and will recognize an interpreter of color for their work in our community.

o Here is where we need your help! We would like to recognize an interpreter of color for their service to our community. We think it's time for us to make sure our contributions to the field are not only known, but documented! We have legends among us and we want them to be honored. If you want to nominate someone to be recognized, the requirements are simple.

1) Send an email or signed message to itoc.secretary@gmail.com.
2) Give us the name of the individual that you would like to see recognized. 3) Tell us why they should be recognized. What type of contributions have they made to their community (This may be volunteer service at the local, regional, or national level. It could be educational achievements that aim to advance the interpreting profession overall or specifically for interpreters of color. Or, something else not listed here that is worthy of recognition).
4) Send us your nominations by July 1, 2015 to give us time to review nominations and prepare to recognize the individual during the ITOC forum at the national conference.

That's it. The ITOC council will review all of the nominations and will select one award recipient. We hope this tradition will continue and that every two years at the national conference, we will recognize an interpreter of color for the excellent things they are doing for our community and for the field of interpreting!

·  Monday, 8/10 at 9am - Social Justice Plenary Session - a discussion on social justice and what it means for interpreters.

·  Tuesday, 8/11 at 2pm - Social Justice Round Table - an opportunity to engage in conscious, critical dialogue, covering a range of issues in our field. We will have panelists who will demonstrate the importance of vulnerability and how to engage in these important discussions, in a safe space. Participants will be given the opportunity to engage in similar dialogues in small groups. Anyone who wants to learn about social justice and how to engage in these discussions will want to participate. Those already actively aspiring towards social justice will also not want to miss the Monday morning and Tuesday afternoon sessions. 

o Note: The SJ plenary session and the SJRT are the result of a collaboration between ITOC, IDP, Deaf Caucus and BLeGIT and is also ITOC's way of directly responding to the survey of our members, who overwhelmingly wanted to see discussions of social justice, power, privilege and oppression, and multiculturalism at the RID national conference. We hope you can make it!

ITOC lanyards

We will have ITOC lanyards on sale again starting now, and during the conference. The cost is one for $3 or two for $5. The profit earned by the sale of these lanyards will help us continue to provide professional development opportunities that specifically address the needs of interpreters of color.

Nomination Information for the ITOC Council

• Nominations require the signatures of no less than ten (10) Member Section members.
• Nomination forms will be submitted electronically to itoc.secretary@gmail.com by April 1, 2015
• Ballot: Ballots will be sent electronically to voting members by May 1, 2015
• Contested Elections: Contested elections shall be determined by plurality of those eligible and voting. In the event of an uncontested election, the presiding officer of the member section shall cast one ballot for the nominee.
• Elections Results: Election results and vote counts will be made known to the candidates and to the board of directors within thirty (30) days of the election.
• The ITOC Officers (Chair, Vice- Chair and Sect/Treasurer) are collectively referred to as a Member Section council.

Term:

Two year period beginning at the conclusion of the 2015 RID National Conference and concluding at the end of the 2017 RID National Conference.

ITOC Council:

• The Chair, Vice-Chair and Secretary/treasurer ITOC shall comprise the Interpreters and Transliterators of Color Council and members of the Member Section Council.
• Each officer shall have been a member in good standing in the RID, Inc. for one year prior to their election.
• Officers shall maintain their membership in good standing in both RID, Inc. and the Interpreters and Transliterators of Color during their 2 year term of office.

Council Duties:

Chair:

a.      The Chair shall be a certified member in good standing of the RID, Inc. and a member in good standing of the Interpreters and Transliterators of Color.

b.       S/he shall conduct all meetings.

c.       Submits comprehensive financial and activity reports to the ITOC members and to the RID Board of Directors as outlined in the Member Section Policy.

d.      The Chair shall represent the Interpreters and Transliterators of Color to the RID, Inc. Community, and its standing and ad hoc committees, or s/he may appoint a representative.

e.      S/he shall represent the Interpreters and Transliterators of Color to other organizations under direction of the RID, Inc. Board of Directors or s/he may appoint a representative.

f.        Belongs and participates on Member Section Council yahoogroup.

g.      Acts as liaison between members of ITOC and the RID Board of Directors.

h.      Maintains other powers as assigned by the RID Board or the ITOC Council.

Vice Chair:

i.        The Vice Chair shall be a certified member in good standing of the RID, Inc. and the Interpreters and Transliterators of Color.

j.        Shall conduct the Chair's duties if the Chair cannot complete his/her duties.

k.       S/he shall act as the liaison to any committees

l.        Belongs and participates on Member Section Council yahoogroup.

m.    Other duties as proscribed by members.

Secretary/Treasurer

n.      The Secretary/Treasurer shall be a certified or associate member in good standing of the RID, Inc. and the Interpreters and Transliterators of Color.

o.      S/he shall keep and maintain a full and accurate record of all general and officers meetings and accurate accounting of all funds and submit them to the Chair in accordance of the due date stated within the Members Section Policy.

p.      S/he shall make an accounting report at all General meetings

Hi! My name is Erica West Oyedele. I am the Chair for RID's member section ITOC (Interpreters and Transliterators of Color). I want to take a few moments of your time to share with you what's going on with ITOC. I have three discussion points to share with you.

1) Poll questions: The ITOC council has agreed that one of our goals is to encourage member involvement within ITOC. We believe it’s important that we have a better understanding of your experiences and perspectives. The council decided that we would do this by posting poll questions periodically to seek your input related to the interpreting profession. Poll questions will be posted on our website, and within our Facebook group. Those will be coming soon.

2) RID national conference: The RID national conference is this year in August in New Orleans. ITOC is looking forward to being there. ITOC is currently in the planning stages for an event that we are not prepared to make an announcement but we will soon. Again, this means please look to our website and our Facebook page for more information.

3) ITOC council nominations: This relates to the previous topic. It is time to elect new council members. Positions that will be opening are mine, the position of Chair. As well as the position of Vice Chair, and Secretary/Treasurer. The newly elected council members will take office during the RID national conference. The call for nominations and the vote will take place prior to the conference. More details will be posted soon on our website and in Facebook.
